Understanding PDA: Supporting Autonomy, Reducing Pressure
For many PDAers, everyday demands can create significant stress and distress. Understanding the PDAers can help us look beyond behaviour and consider what is happening underneath.
Taught from an identity-positive perspective by an identifying PDA Autistic, this workshop explores demand avoidance, autonomy, sensory experiences, body–mind differences and other common PDA traits. We’ll consider how these can affect everyday activities such as dressing, eating, toileting, hygiene and sleep.
Most importantly, we’ll explore practical ways to reduce pressure, support autonomy and build collaboration, including communication approaches that can help everyday life feel more manageable for PDA young people. Attendees will also receive supporting resources to help put the learning into practice.
