Puberty brings big changes to the body, but it can also change how emotions feel and how easily young people become overwhelmed. For neurodivergent and learning-disabled young people, these changes can sometimes show up as increased distress or changes in how they communicate their needs.

Puberty, Emotions & Distress: Supporting Your Young Person
Puberty brings big changes to the body, but it can also change how emotions feel and how easily young people become overwhelmed. For neurodivergent and learning-disabled young people, these changes can sometimes show up as increased distress, outbursts or changes in how they communicate their needs.
In this workshop, we’ll explore what happens during puberty, how hormones can affect emotions and regulation, and why distress may look different at different ages. We’ll consider the journey from younger children approaching puberty through to teenagers, recognising that there is no single way for young people to experience growing up.
Most importantly, we’ll focus on how we respond when things become difficult. We’ll explore practical, compassionate ways to understand what might be underneath distress, reduce pressure and support young people through big feelings and big changes.
