‘Creating Safe Spaces for Autistic People’ is our booklet to help services be truly more inclusive of our community members.
We are Autistic educators & have personal experience in guiding organisations with creating affirming groups & we also know the benefits of when we are able to come together with our community members. We know that in these safe spaces that we are able to thrive.
Our booklet outlines some of the key principles, values & approaches that can cultivate a safe space for Autistic people & better ensure that your event or group is accessible.
This guide is both for identifying & non-identifying Autistic people to help support developing their groups across a range of settings & activities such as lunch clubs, interest-based groups, community events, play groups, library activities and online gatherings. It is also relevant for schools, universities, healthcare services & therapists who are looking to make a safe space for Autistics.
Our booklet reviews guidelines to build the foundations of your group and includes ensuring that your staff or volunteers have the best knowledge to meet participant needs. We also outline the variety of areas to consider in order to create ongoing accessibility for participants. The aim is to help Autistics feel able to join and to maintain group participation if they would like. In addition, there are discussions that feature supporting PDA Autistics, participants in distress & community intersections. Throughout the booklet, we have included insight and reflections from various educators, professionals & advocates. Their experiences provide additional ideas of support & highlight how important it has been for them to be connected into the community.
We hope that each of you are able to take away meaningful ways forward for your group so that Autistic participants are truly welcomed, validated & comfortable taking part.
